Named the Most Trusted Brand for six years running by Kelley Blue Book, there is no question that Subaru is one of the best-selling brands in the American automotive industry. Since its debut on American soil in the late 1960s, Subaru has built its reputation for offering practical vehicles at affordable prices that keep drivers coming back time and time again. This is exactly what you'll find at any Subaru dealership but especially at Richard Lucas Subaru, where we are proud to continue the Subaru legacy.

What makes Subaru so special beyond its affordability and practicality? From Subaru's many awards and signature engineering to programs like Subaru's TradeUp Advantage, where should we start? With the introduction of the Subaru 360 in 1968, Subaru laid the foundation of its signature engineering with the boxer engine and symmetrical all-wheel drive that paved the way for generations of Subarus to come. It also established the Subaru as a reputable vehicle that could log thousands of miles with ease.

Subaru's dozens of awards from Kelley Blue Book, J.D. Power, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and numerous others prove that we're not the only ones who think Subaru is special. Kelley Blue Book named it the Best Overall Brand and Most Trusted Brand. Subaru also has high rankings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety thanks to cutting-edge technology and driver-assistance features. From its innovative engineering and technology to its numerous awards and programs, Subaru has so much to offer. We're excited to share more of Subaru's history as well as everything we have to offer as your Subaru dealer. We know that once you visit the dealership and see what makes up the Subaru brand, you'll become a Subaru customer for life.

Driving Through Time: Subaru History

Subaru got its start in the Japanese automotive industry in 1954 and spent the next decade building its foundation before venturing into the American car market with the debut of the Subaru 360 in 1968. Marketed as "cheap and ugly," what the 360 lacked in appearance, it made up for in affordability and power since it was cheaper and lighter than the widely popular Volkswagen Beetle. The 360 was priced at $1,297 and was equipped with a two-stroke engine that delivered an impressive fuel economy of over 66 MPG.

The success of the 360 inspired the debut of the FF1, which was priced at $1,699 and was available as a two-door coupe, four-door sedan, or wagon. Equipped with front-wheel drive, the FF1 was popular in rural America since it could travel down rough farm roads with ease. However, Subaru had even greater plans in the works in 1973 and replaced the FF1 with the Leone, which was bigger and more powerful than its predecessor. Two years later, Subaru made history with the release of the first four-wheel-drive passenger car sold in the United States with the debut of the 4WD wagon.

Positioning itself in the four-wheel drive market, Subaru's popularity continued to rise with the release of models like the GF, Brat, XT Coupe, Justy, and Legacy. By the 1990s, Subaru entered the performance luxury niche with the debut of the 1992 SVX that remains a cult classic long after its discontinuation in 1997. The rest of the decade saw the introduction of the Impreza, Outback, and Forester, all of which became top-sellers for the brand and inspired even bigger innovation in the new millennium with models like the WRX, Baja, Tribeca, and the Ascent.
