Get the 2023 Subaru Outback That’s Right for You
The Subaru Outback is one of the most impressive midsize SUVs on the road––there are so many options and trims available, however, that choosing the right one can be tricky. Fortunately, as your Subaru Outback dealer, Richard Lucas Subaru is here to make things easier by taking you through what the Outback has to offer to help you figure out which combination of features will best meet your needs. While we’re always happy to answer all of your questions in person, we’ve put together a little buyer’s guide to help you figure some of these things out on your own and make shopping for your next Outback even easier.
Why Choose the Subaru Outback?
The Subaru Outback is a midsize SUV with a surprisingly luxurious design considering its very reasonable starting price. It has an overall look that feels a bit like a lifted station wagon, with sleek lines and curves that are more stylish than many other SUVs out there. For the 2023 model, this gorgeous exterior has been refreshed with an upgraded look that includes a larger grille, updated headlights, and a new front bumper. This is a two-row model with seating for up to five people, which makes it a great choice for families, individuals, and anyone looking to hit the open road and enjoy the drive.
Two Impressive Engines
There are two engines available for the 2023 Outback, but you can’t simply pick and choose which one you want––your choice of trim dictates the engine you get. You can also think of this in reverse: your choice of engine will help you narrow down the numerous trim levels available, making it easier to find the Outback that’s right for you. The standard engine is a 2.5L Boxer four-cylinder engine that delivers 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque and can handle 2,700 lbs of towing. This engine gives the 2023 Outback an estimated 26 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway.
You can choose an available 2.4L turbocharged engine that delivers 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. The extra power from this option lets the Outback tow up to 3,500 lbs, but with this engine, you’ll get an estimated 22 MPG in the city and 29 MPG on the highway. You can see that there’s a bit of a tradeoff between power and fuel efficiency, so you’ll have to decide which is more important to you and choose accordingly.
Off-Road Capability
Every Subaru Outback has impressive off-road capability thanks to the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) that comes standard on every trim. Standard AWD is something that’s very rare among popular SUVs, and it really sets the Outback apart from many other vehicles on the road. Subaru’s X-MODE also comes standard with this AWD system, giving you extra traction when you need it most.
If you’re looking for exceptional off-road performance, you’ll want to check out the Outback Wilderness, which is designed to tackle just about any trail. With the Wilderness model, you get 9.5 inches of ground clearance and a front skid plate, which lets you navigate rough and rocky terrain and protects the underside of your Subaru. To take its off-road capability even further, the Wilderness has unique front and rear bumpers designed to improve its approach and departure angles, plus it features an enhanced X-MODE with settings for deep snow, sand, and mud. You get the turbocharged engine in the Wilderness, 17-inch wheels wrapped in Yokohama GEOLANDAR tires, plus a full-size spare just in case the trail proves extra treacherous.
A Spacious Interior
One thing you don’t have to make a decision on is the fantastic amount of space you’ll get inside any 2023 Subaru Outback you choose. This includes 40 inches of headroom, nearly 43 inches of legroom, and more than 58 inches of shoulder room up front. Your back seat passengers get over 39 inches of headroom and legroom for 109 cu.ft. of total passenger volume within the Outback. You also get plenty of room to load up with stuff: the Outback has more than 32 cu.ft. of rear cargo volume and more than 75 cu.ft. of total cargo space for you to use.
Great Comfort Features
As you’re considering different trims of the Outback, it’s important to think about the kinds of comfort features you want. The standard Base trim has manually-adjustable front seats, with cloth upholstery and automatic climate control. This is a fine place to start, but there’s much more available. The Premium trim features a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter handle.
Once you look at higher trims, you can find things like a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with four-way power lumbar and an eight-way power-adjustable front-passenger seat. Plus, the Outback offers heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel. Some models have special water-repellent upholstery to last longer, while others feature Nappa-leather upholstery for extra comfort and luxury. Other than the Base trim, every Outback also features dual-zone climate control to keep you and your passengers very comfortable.
Innovative Technology Options
Beyond technology to keep you comfortable, there are plenty of other great features and options to provide you with an innovative and intuitive driving experience. The Base trim has a pair of seven-inch Multimedia displays, a four-speaker sound system, and USB ports. You get cruise control on every model (more on that below), plus a steering wheel with integrated controls, transmission paddle shifters, and interior lighting.
Looking at higher trims, you can find an impressive number of advanced tech features to really take your drive to the next level. There’s an 11.6-inch Multimedia display with available Navigation, 4G LTE Wi-Fi capability, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system with a 576-watt amplifier. You can also get Keyless Access with Push-Button Start, a Hands-free Power Rear Gate, a two-position memory function for the driver’s seat and mirrors, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. All these features come together to provide you with fantastic options, but you have numerous trims to choose from, so you can get just what you want.
Standard and Available Safety Features
Subaru has packed the 2023 Outback with some of the most impressive driver-assist features on the road, and most of them come standard on every trim––but there are a few extra options you can choose from. No matter what trim you go for, you’ll get Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology package. This includes Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering, Pre-Collision Braking, and Automatic Emergency Steering to give you more control when trying to avoid a crash. You also get a Lane Departure and Sway Warning to keep you from drifting from your lane, plus Lane Keep Assist to help you stay there.
If you want even more, then the available safety features include a DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System, Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert to warn you about a vehicle you might not be able to see, and Reverse Automatic Braking to help you avoid a crash. You can also get a 180-degree Front-View Monitor to provide you with extra visibility behind the wheel, making it easier to avoid obstacles you might not be able to see.
