2022 Subaru Outback Buyer’s Guide
You may have heard that there is no need to improve on perfection. This saying may have been coined when Subaru introduced the Outback way back in 1995. There are excellent reasons why the Outback remains a driver’s choice in a tough market crowded with all types of SUVs. Although the Outback might be defined as a mid-size SUV, it does offer everything you would expect in an SUV built for those who indulge in an active lifestyle, but it feels more like a car when you are behind the wheel. But that’s just one reason why so many are drawn to the Outback. Another draw is that the Outback isn’t your typical SUV; it’s a wagon at heart and a comfortable and fully functional vehicle. In fact, the 2022 Subaru Outback (which you can find at this NJ Subaru Outback dealer) has a lot to offer.
Engine and Performance
The new Outback features the same engine choices as last year. The base, Premium, and Limited models come with a 2.5-liter flat-four that boasts 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. With this engine choice, you can expect to get 26 miles per gallon in the city and 33 miles per gallon on the highway. The higher trim levels come standard with a 2.4-liter turbo flat-four kicking out 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. This turbocharged engine is quick and will get you from 0 to 60 in just under six seconds. Both engines are paired with a CVT automatic transmission.
Anybody interested in the Outback will be pleased to hear that all-wheel drive is standard on all models. What this means is that the Outback will give you the capability to go almost anywhere and maneuver through any situation. But, of course, the 8.7 inches of ground clearance is a lot of the reason why a little mud or snow isn’t going to slow your roll.
2022 Outback Trims
In addition to the 8.7-inches of ground clearance, the Base Outback includes several nifty features. Let’s start with the standard EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, which offers several features aimed at keeping you safe behind the wheel. In an effort to keep you a safe distance from the car in front of you, Adaptive Cruise Control allows you to choose the distance you want between you and the car ahead, and it will maintain that distance by automatically adjusting your speed. EyeSight also includes Lane Keep Assist and Sway Warning that sounds an alarm should you drift from your lane. Pre-Collision Braking reduces the chances of a front-end collision by applying the brakes in emergency situations. The EyeSight features include Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control and Pre-Collision Throttle Management. Other great features found on the base model include Subaru Starlink with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and LED responsive headlights.
Moving up on the list, we have the Outback Premium, which comes with all of the Outback features plus some added extras, including a 10-way power driver’s seat and heated front seats. In addition, all passengers in the Premium will stay comfortable with the dual-zone automatic climate control. And for good measure, the Premium comes standard with LED fog lights.
The Outback Limited is next on the list, and this model enjoys all of the features of the previous models with a few extra goodies, including an 8-way power front passenger seat and keyless access with a push-button start. The 18-inch alloy wheels are a nice touch and add plenty of style to this Outback. The leather-trimmed upholstery adds class to the interior, and the 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system kicks out an impressive 576 watts.
The Outback Touring model includes the key features found on the Limited and a few additions, including ventilated seats and a heated steering wheel. In addition, you feel like you are driving a luxury sedan with the Nappa leather-trimmed upholstery. The power moonroof is a great addition, and you will appreciate the Multimedia Navigation included with the Subaru Starlink.
The Onyx Edition XT is the model that combines luxury and capability. Weekend adventurists will appreciate the dual-function X-Mode with Hill Descent Control, while commuters are sure to love the hands-free power rear gate and keyless access. The Limited and Touring models also come in an XT version, which adds several features, including power-folding mirrors and a 180-degree front-view monitor.
Introducing the Outback Wilderness
The Wilderness is the latest entry to the Outback lineup and boasts some serious capabilities. In addition to the standard all-wheel drive, the Wilderness has a raised suspension, so you enjoy an amazing 9.5 inches of ground clearance, enough to get you through the roughest terrain. Then you have the unique front and rear bumpers that include an extended lower cladding and integrated tow points.
In addition to the functional upgrades that make this model a beast in off-road conditions, the Wilderness also offers plenty of features that give it a unique look. For example, the 17-inch wheels enjoy a black matte finish as well as all-terrain tires. The interior is stylish as well, thanks to the embossed headrest, anodized copper finish accents, and unique contrast stitching. The Wilderness is a classy model, to be sure.
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, it does, which is no surprise for those who have owned a Subaru in the past. Any model worthy of off-roading will come with a front skid plate, and the Wilderness is no exception. There is also the dual-function X-Mode with settings that include snow, sand, and mud to get you through any road or off-road conditions.
Is the Outback Right for You?
Let’s start off by saying that you don’t have to be a weekend warrior to fully enjoy the 2022 Subaru Outback. Anybody needing a commuter vehicle will be perfectly happy with the Outback. One reason is that the Outback feels and handles very much like a sedan. Sure, the ground clearance and all-wheel drive scream “let’s hit the trails,” and the roof rack is perfect for a kayak, but the Outback is ideal for driving back and forth from work as well. And if you don’t have a kayak, the roof rack is also ideal for luggage or that antique cabinet you found at the flea market.
